Chuck;
Do you have the original CD, Product Key, Certificate of Authenticity
etc?
If yes, then no problem.
Install on the new computer, worst case is a 5 minute call to
Microsoft.

This may not apply if Windows XP is OEM.

Also, for the future, remove any applications/operating systems from a
sold/returned computer unless they are included with the computer.

I bought a pc a couple of weeks ago and then returned it.
While I was using it I registered Windows XP professional
on it by phone.

When I returned the computer the dealer said I had to keep
the copy of Windows XP, since I'd registered it. He
assured me that when I buy another computer I'll be able
to use my copy of Windows XP on that new computer.

But I'm worried that XP won't allow itself to be put on
another computer, and that I'll be stuck with a worthless
copy of XP. So what actually happens whey you try to
install XP on a new computer after having installed in on
another computer previously?

What is the difference if it's OEM?

Greetings --

An OEM license, once installed, is not legally transferable to
another computer under any cir***stances. The only legitimate way to
transfer the ownership of an OEM license is to transfer ownership of
the entire PC.

IOW, if the PC had an OEM installation, the salesman lied to the
OP. The OP would *not* be able to re-use the OS on another computer.
